Basketball- Blog Post #8

Outside Bridgewater Middle School, a group of students participated in an intense game of basketball. Bridgewater is located in Winter Garden, Florida. The school is for students in grades 6-8. It was a hot, sunny day, which may have affected the athlete’s ability to play their best.  The game was part of an everyday gym class, which means many of the kids were not experienced basketball players, they were simply having fun.

At first, the game was off to a great start! The first two players on each team made fantastic layups.  Although layups are some of the easiest shots to make, it does require skill. The students were able to maneuver around the opposing players in order to score.

Unfortunately, that seemed to be the best two plays of the game. After that, many shots were taken, but only a few points were scored. A few students tried to score 3 pointers, but no one was successful.

A great aspect of this game was that the players did not give up. They all seemed to get along and support each other. Even when a player didn’t make the shot, their teammates still encouraged them.  (This is a big deal in middle school because not everyone shows sportsmanship, I know I don’t).  This may have been a good lesson for me to learn that day.

As the game continued, the students kept trying to score. At this point, the score was 19-15 and pretty low on the action.  One student tried to make a heavily contested inside paint shot, he ended up missing miserably. The ball actually went over the fence and nearly drilled me in the right arm.  This is when I knew, these students were not serious athletes.  I had to throw the ball back to the players so the game could continue.

I thought the game was pretty much over at this point, until… a student made a double team half court shot.  This was an incredible feat, definitely not one I was expecting due to the way this game was going.  It was a nice ending to a pretty much average game.   Image result for basketball game middle school outside

All About Me!

Hello, Readers!

My name is Patrick Mattern and I am twelve years old.  I live in Central Florida and am OBSESSED with sports. My favorite sports are baseball, basketball and tennis.  I have played both basketball and baseball since I was in kindergarten and am currently starting to play tennis. My dad, Larry, is also obsessed sports and stats (that is why he is an accountant) my mom and sister know a little about sports, but I mostly tell them the information.   I not only love playing these sports, I love watching them and analyzing their stats.

I would like to go to Vanderbilt College for Sports Journalism.  While in college, I would love to play baseball as well.  Some journalists I look up to are, Ken Rosenthal, Andy Martino, and Adrian Wojarnowski.  I like that these journalists are able to get most of their predictions correct and can report breaking news accurately.

My goal for this blog is to bring the reader breaking news, my predictions, and current hot topics.  I would love to be scouted by MLB Trade Rumors and possibly get a job there! MLB Trade Rumors is my favorite site to gather information from, but I will also use my own stats and personal interviews.

Since I live in Central Florida, I often get to see professional athletes, I will always try to get an interview with them and grab an autograph or two.  Keep looking on my blog for updates and possibly interviews with the pros! I can’t wait to share my stories with you!

An interview with Felipe Lopez

On the morning of the 2nd, I had a chance to interview former major league all star Felipe Lopez. His MLB career spanned 10 years, playing with the Reds, Rays, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Diamondbacks, and the Brewers. He hit a career .264 with 90 homers, and 439 RBIs. When I asked what his favorite team to play for was, he responded with, “The St. Louis Cardinals. Though I only played there for about a season, their fans were extremely passionate, and the ballpark was fantastic.” I later asked what being in the majors was like, and he said, “Think about if you wanted to be a doctor, or a chef, and you accomplished that. It was a great feeling. Having all I ever wanted.” Lopez was a very nice guy, and i’m very happy that I had the chance to meet him.

AL Notes: Buchholz, Cowart, Cabrera, Twins, Farquhar

•Clay Buchholz is drawing interest from multiple clubs, including the Rangers. They have already upgraded their rotation, Signing Lance Lynn, Drew Smyly, Shelby Miller, and Edinson Volquez, and now are in contact with Clay Buchholz, who had a nice season. He pitched to a 7-2 record with a dazzling 2.01 ERA, with 81 Ks, a 1.04 WHIP, and a .220 OPP AVG in 16 games, 81.2 innings. He would make a nice pickup for a rebuilding rangers club, who especially needs starting pitchers.

•The Mariners have announced that they have DFA’d 2-way-player Kaleb Cowart. Earlier in the offseason, he was acquired from the angelf for minor leaguers. He hit .134 with 1 homer, 10 RBIs, and a .534 OPS in 47 games. He plans on becoming a pitcher.

•The Rangers have reportedly agreed to terms on a 1 year, $3.55M for next season. Cabrera is can play any infield position, with above average defense, and hits pretty well too. last year, he hit .262 with 23 homers, 75 RBIs, and a .754 OPS in 147 games. I would say that this is a nice veteran pickup for the rangers.

•The Twins have agreed to a deal with Martin Perez on a one year deal worth $3.5M and an option for 2020. Perez will join a twins staff with Jose Berrios, Jake Odorizzi, Kyle Gibson, Michael Pineda, Stephen Gonsalves, Fernando Romero, and Adalberto Mejia. Perez pitched to a 2-7 record with a 6.22 ERA, and 52 Ks in 85.1 innings.

•The Yankees have signed Danny Farquhar to a minor league contract. Farquhar, who survived a deadly ruptured aneurysm, missed most of 2018 recovering. I’m glad that he will pitch again and with one of the MLB’s best teams.

Reds acquire, extend Sonny Gray in a 3-team-deal with the Yankees, Mariners

The Cincinnati Reds, a rebuilding team that finally expects to compete, has bolstered its rotation this offseason, acquiring Alex Wood, Tanner Roark, and now gray. In return, they gave 2B Shed Long to the Yankees for Gray, and the Yanks sent Long directly to the Mariners for Josh Stowers, a 2nd round pick. Gray had a horrible season, to say the least, pitching to an awful 4.90 ERA with 71 earned runs in 130 innings. But the worst thing he did, was walk off the mound, smiling, after having an awful start against the Orioles, which made yankees fans very unhappy with Gray. Even worse, the Yankees gave up a huge haul for gray, including former top prospect, Jorge Mateo. The Reds gave gray a 3 year $30M deal, extending him through the 2022 season.
